Recently, the International Association of Automata Engineers (SAE) Aerospace Material Addition Manufacturing Committee (AMS-AM) issued the first set of industrial material and process standards for additives manufacturing, including four specific standards, mainly involving powder bed-based laser melting (LPBF) additives manufacturing technology. Specifically as follows:
AMS7000, 62Ni21.5Cr9.0Mo3.65Nb Corrosion Resistant and Heat Resistant Nickel Alloy LPBF Additives Manufactured Parts by Stress Elimination, Hot Isostatic Pressure and Solution Annealing
AMS7001, 62Ni21.5Cr9.0Mo3.65Nb Corrosion Resistant and Heat Resistant Nickel Alloy Powder for Additive Manufacturing
AMS7002, Requirements of Raw Material Preparation Technology for Additional Manufacturing of Aerospace Equipment Parts and Components
AMS7003, Laser Melting Technology Based on Powder Bed
In 2015, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) asked SAE to set up a technical committee to formulate aerospace materials standards and related documents to assist FAA in the certification of aerospace equipment add-on manufacturing components, including the certification of commercial aircraft with very strict quality requirements. SAE stakeholders said that the issued standards can support the certification of key components of aerospace equipment and ensure the integrity and traceability of material properties data in the supply chain.
More than 350 SAE members from more than 15 countries participated in the development of the standard, including aircraft and engine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), material suppliers, operators, equipment/system suppliers, service providers, etc. SAE officials said that scientific research and production units and regulatory authorities from North America, Europe and other regions have spent a lot of energy in compiling this set of preliminary materials and process standards to meet regulatory requirements for the certification guidance materials for the new technology of add-on manufacturing. SAE will continue to work out manufacturing standards for additives of metal and polymer materials and promote the application of additives in aerospace.
